About Public Safety Director Steve Cooper

Steve Cooper, serving Oak Park since 1990.  He has 23 years of Public Safety experience with the City of Oak Park.  Prior to his appointment as Director, he served as the Deputy Director from August 2006 until December 2011. He then served as Acting Director from December 2011 until May 2012.

Director Cooper was hired as a Public Safety Officer with the City of Oak Park July of 1990. He has 13 years of supervisory experience, which includes the Patrol Division, the Investigations Bureau, and the Field Training Officer Program. He is a former member of the Special Response Team (10 years).

He holds a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from Ferris State University and is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigations' National Academy, 227th Session.

What Does the Director of Public Safety Do?

The Department of Public Safety is directed by the Director of Public Safety, the commanding officer of the Department. The Director directs the police and fire work of the City, is responsible for the enforcement of law and order, the protection of life and property against fire, and the performance of other public services of an emergency nature.
