Abdulwajid Akhenaton Charged with Two Counts of Murder in the First Degree, Premeditated; and Firearms Felony
>September 16, 2016, 4:00 p.m. Oak Park, Michigan – Abdulwajid Akhenaton, 61, was arraigned by video on Friday, September 16 before the Honorable David M. Gubow, Chief Judge Pro Tem, at the 45th District Court for double homicide on Wednesday, September 14 in the City of Oak Park, Mich. Bond was denied.
Akhenaton is charged with the following:
- Count 1: Homicide - Murder First Degree, Premeditated resulting in death. This charge could result in life in prison.
- Count 2: Possession of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. This is a felony which carries a term of two consecutive years with and preceding any term of imprisonment imposed for the felony or attempted felony conviction.
- Count 3: Homicide – Murder First Degree, Premeditated resulting in death. This charge could result in life in prison.
Bond was denied due to the seriousness of the offenses and for public safety reasons, according to Honorable David M. Gubow during the arraignment.
Akhenaton is due back in 45th District Court on September 29 at 1 p.m. for a probable cause hearing and is tentatively scheduled for a preliminary hearing on October 4 at a time that will be determined at the September 29 hearing.
On September 14 at approximately 7 p.m., Oak Park Public Safety Officers responded to a call in the 21000 block of Church Street. Upon arrival, officers found two deceased females, both Oak Park residents who reside at the residence. One victim, a 66-year-old female, is the wife of Akhenaton. The other victim, a 53-year-old female, is the sister-in-law of Akhenaton.
